Lost in the fantasy gameworld Dragon Age: Origins III

4A word of gameplay advice: you’re going to want to keep a Rogue in your group. The Rogue’s lockpicking skill is the only way to open locked chests. Dragon Age has no version of Dungeons & Dragons’ venerable “Knock” spell, nor can you forcibly open chests as you could in the Baldur’s Gate series. Yes, you can slay demons and dragons a-plenty, but a lowly locked chest will vex you if you venture without a Rogue.

Romance also remains present per the BioWare formula, and hence you have opportunities to establish relationships in Dragon Age — including a homosexual relationship. It’s encouraging to see a major developer delve into same-sex relationships; we appreciate how BioWare’s attempting to expand the roles of our characters in role-playing games. we do wonder how gay men and women view this — as a welcome addition, or a clumsy attempt at initiating a same-sex relationship?

It does sadden me that in crafting such a well-made RPG, BioWare leaned a little too much on its inspiration and tired fantasy tropes. This is the first fantasy world that BioWare’s created from scratch, and at times, the cited influence of George R.R. Martin’s fantastic “A Song of Ice and Fire” series is a bit too obvious. The Grey Wardens and their sworn enemy, the Darkspawn, feel a bit too similar to Martin’s Night’s Watch guarding the realm of Westeros from the supernatural Others. Political machinations plunge Ferelden into a civil war — just like in “A Song of Ice and Fire.”
